UCLA Weyburn Terrace

NYA provided structural engineering for this $147 Million project, including early concept studies and structural system definition. The project consists of multiple residential structures, within seven blocks. The structures are 4-stories wood framing above 2-stories of concrete and liner units, in front of garages. Collaboration with the architect on unit layout, façade geometry, and concrete to wood-framing transitions was critical to develop a structural scheme that made full use of the efficiency of this type of construction.
NYA was also the structural engineer for the addition to Weyburn Terrace (Phase 2), a new 9-story concrete flat plate building that contains more than 500 units for graduate students and a 17,000 sf commons building. This addition is located in the southwest portion of UCLA’s campus. For this project, NYA’s initial concept studies developed recommended column and wall layouts that facilitated the unit planning and allowed for a light structural deck with minimal needs for drops and beams.
This project won the 2015 Congress for the New Urbanism Charter Award
