Advanced Nonlinear Seismic Analysis for Safer Structures
At NYA, we apply advanced nonlinear seismic analysis to assess how buildings respond during real earthquake events. This technique models nonlinear material behavior and dynamic forces to simulate structural performance under extreme seismic loads. Therefore, it offers a more realistic picture than traditional linear methods.
Why Advanced Nonlinear Seismic Analysis Matters
Unlike conventional approaches, advanced nonlinear seismic analysis reveals the full extent of structural response, including damage progression and energy dissipation. As a result, engineers can predict not just whether a building will stand, but *how* it will behave during an earthquake. This leads to safer and more resilient design strategies, especially for critical infrastructure and high-rise buildings.
What’s Included in Our Analysis
Time-history ground motion simulations
Nonlinear hinge and material modeling
Performance-based evaluation per ASCE 41 & FEMA P-58
Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA)
Customized fragility curves for retrofit planning
Proven Results Across the Globe
NYA has implemented advanced nonlinear seismic analysis in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. Additionally, our team has provided guidance for critical buildings in Egypt, Greece, and South Korea. This method ensures our designs meet the most demanding seismic codes, and often exceed them. Moreover, it allows stakeholders to weigh risk, performance, and cost more accurately.
Our project portfolio features buildings that rely on advanced nonlinear seismic analysis for safety and code compliance. For example, recent retrofits and high-rise towers across California demonstrate how this technique can optimize performance without compromising on cost or design vision.

Advanced Nonlinear Seismic Analysis
NYA is a leader in the field of advanced nonlinear seismic analysis for the evaluation, design, and retrofit of buildings. To complement our substantial seismic design and review experience, we are well versed in commonly adopted advanced analysis software such as Perform3D, ETABS-Ultimate, and SAP2000 in which we have developed some of the largest and most complex nonlinear models of our profession supported by specially developed computers to maximize our parallel processing computational capabilities and efficiency. With our engineering and computational mechanics knowledge we co-develop new software to incorporate advances from research and testing to validate the performance of new and existing buildings as presented in the following sections.
ETABS -Ultimate nonlinear model of UCSF New Hospital in San Francisco including viscous dampers and foundations modeling.
Potrero Yard, San Francisco
ETABS – Ultimate nonlinear model for Potrero Yard in San Francisco, including viscous dampers.
Vallco Town Center
ETABS – Ultimate nonlinear model for Vallco Town Center including seismic isolation of high-rise towers.
