Mr. Giammona is a technical leader in the firm and has helped lead the execution of a number of NYA’s most significant and technically challenging projects. 

 

He is a leader in advanced technologies, such as Performance-Based Seismic Design (PBSD), base isolation, fluid viscous dampers, and resiliency design. He has authored a number of publications on these subjects.  

 

He has lead the successful execution of many of the firm's most high-profile performance-based engineering projects, including The New Stanford Hospital, UCSF's New Hospital Parnassus Heights, Vallco Town Center (The Rise), and the Visitor Center at Apple's world headquarters in Cupertino, California. 

 

Additionally, he has served as a plan reviewer or peer reviewer for a number of monumental projects, including Apple's Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. 

 

He also leads the firm's pedestrian bridge group which focuses on unique and architecturally intense pedestrian bridges. 

 

Mr. Giammona recognizes the importance of staying at the forefront of industry standards, and as such is a member of a number of technical and code development committees, and has served as a reviewer for technical journals. 

 

With a career spanning two decades, he has experience in design, review, and project management across a wide range of project types, from large to small, new construction to retrofit, and many construction materials.

 

Mr. Giammona is a leader in NYA’s San Francisco office.

- SEAOC Equity and Engagement Report (2016) – Core contributor to a report documenting the results of a survey within the structural engineering community. Focus on job satisfaction of structural engineers and how this differs by gender.

 

- Blue Book Article When to Consider Seismic Isolation (2016) - Co-authored an article to promote the use of seismic isolation targeted at practicing engineers and the layperson.

 

- Base Isolation Design Example – 2012 IBC Seismic Design Manual Volume 5, Structural Engineers of California (2015) - Co-authored a design example for practicing engineers illustrating how to design a base isolated building. This document is published by SEAOC and distributed to the engineering community.

 

- Evaluation of Assumptions Used in Engineering Practice to Model Buildings Isolated With Triple Pendulum Isolators in SAP2000 (2015). Published in May 20015 issue of Earthquake Engineering Research Institute’s Journal EERI Spectra. Served as Principal Investigator for this project that evaluated the accuracy of computer models used by practicing engineers by comparing them to a full scale isolated test building and the findings of a university research program.

 

- Crowded Isolation – How the Design for an Impressive Research Building on a Challenging Site Came to Be (2010) – Published in Modern Steel Construction. First author of this paper describing the design challenges of the UCSF Dolby Regenerative Medicine Building.

Research

- NEES TIPS/E-Defense Test Program – Kobe, Japan and University of Nevada, Reno. Collaborated with researchers testing a full scale base isolated building on the E-defense shake table in Kobe, Japan. Worked with the research team to provide recommendations from a design engineer perspective and performed independent analysis to validate the computer models used by design engineers.

- Shake table testing of a typical San Francisco wood house over garage – U.C. Berkeley. As part of a PEER internship, developed structural drawings for test structure and attachment to shake table. Performed collapse analysis and design of safety rigging and developed instrumentation layout. Project was featured on nationwide television on Dateline NBC.
