Challenges:
One of the major challenges when completing the Eastern Columbia project was taking an obsolete building that did not conform to modern lateral structural design requirements and developing a retrofit that provided life safety requirements, preserved the historic character of the building and gave the building new function.
Solution:
A new, concrete shear wall lateral system was weaved through the interior of the structure along a designated path that permitted the most flexible use of the interior space and avoided unnecessary impacts to the historic terracotta exterior.
