Challenges:
A significant challenge included the design of a long-span glass atrium roof structure to connect the new facilities to the historic museum with modern glass detailing integrated with turn-of-the-century construction.Additional challenges included a mult-phase, extended construction schedule of over ten years and long-span column-free museum spaces.
Solution:
Controlling deflections was paramount in designing the 120-foot cantilevered roof system for the glass panel system. Several concepts were studied, including post-tensioned cables on the main girders to actively control deformations caused by anticipated snow loads.
